LeBron James and Kevin Durant have played many games together — and sometimes against one another — but did you know the two NBA superstars also cooperated on a single many years ago? Yes, you read that correctly. Both James and Durant went into the studio at some time to spit a couple bars for the culture.
According to ESPN, the duo recorded a song together during the 2011 NBA lockout while James was with the Miami Heat and Durant was still with the Oklahoma City Thunder. They were working out together in James’ hometown of Akron, Ohio, when they penned and recorded the song. What if you were a fly on the wall during those studio sessions?
According to the story, KD rapped the first verse, LeBron delivered the second stanza, and KD finished the song while also producing the beat. And get this: the song was a “quality track” with lyrics that were “surprisingly well-crafted and delivered.” It was almost considered for inclusion in the soundtrack of Durant’s film “Thunderstruck,” but he preferred to keep it private.
It’s not that impossible. Both are avid music fans: LeBron has been known to pre-release music by Kendrick Lamar and Meek Mill on social media before the songs are even published, and Kevin Durant’s high rap standards put him subject to the alleged Based God’s Curse after he declared he loathed Lil B’s music.
According to ESPN, both players verified the presence of the track “to a moderate extent,” before laughing.
The song will not be released anytime soon, so fans will have to content themselves with wondering what if while watching the two greats share the court instead of the microphone.
