The Phoenix Suns have dropped five of their previous six games and are on a three-game skid. They were also defeated by the Dallas Mavericks on Christmas Day. The Suns’ defense has become a huge issue, despite their outstanding offensive talent. Opposing teams are now taking advantage of these flaws.
In light of this, veteran NBA guard Brandon Jennings took to X (previously known as Twitter) to express his conviction that Kevin Durant should consider leaving the Suns.
Durant joined the Suns shortly before the 2023 trade deadline. The front management doubled down on providing the superstar forward with a championship-caliber roster this summer, adding Bradley Beal via trade. In addition, they added some rotational talent in separate transactions. The star of such moves was Jusuf Nurkic.
Despite this, Beal has had a difficult start to the season due to injury. Without Beal, the Suns are slightly worse than they were last season. Their roster was built with Beal, Durant, and Devin Booker on the court at the same time.
Durant has done his part. In 25 games, the 35-year-old has averaged 30.3 points, 6.2 rebounds, and 5.5 assists while shooting 51.8% from the field and 46.9% from three-point range. With so much of the season still remaining, Durant will almost certainly be waiting for Beal to return in the hopes that things would improve once the roster’s top three players are frequently sharing the court.
Durant has been with the Suns for less than a year. They have made big changes to provide him with a championship-caliber roster. Regardless matter how bad the roster is, it’s quite unlikely that he’ll try to leave so quickly. There is still a long way to go until the postseason begins. Every team experiences slumps. Durant has enough experience to understand the ups and downs of the regular season.
As a result, Jennings’ wish for Durant to depart the Suns is unlikely to come true anytime soon. If their decrease continues throughout the season, however, things may look different in the summer.
