The Washington Wizards (4-20) are leading the Phoenix Suns (58-46) at halftime.
The Wizards got off to a blazing start in the first quarter, looking to build on their victory over the Indiana Pacers.
Washington outscored the Suns 21-9 in the first eight minutes, led by an all-around scoring surge in which every starter scored.
Because the Wizards are closing down on shooters, Phoenix is suffering terribly from three-point range, going 2-18.
This is the finest defense we’ve seen all season.
They’ve forced Suns guard Devin Booker and forward Kevin Durant to commit five mistakes for a total of 23 points.
Booker started 1-7 from the field but heated up near the conclusion of the half, finishing with 10 points.
The bench has really kept Phoenix in the game, since all of their runs to narrow the difference have come with them in.
This features veteran guard Eric Gordon, who spearheaded the Suns’ second unit.
Gordon had nine points at the half and is shooting 57 percent from the field.
Washington is playing fast, forcing Phoenix to get back and set the defense, which they are doing poorly.
The Wizards are capitalizing by obtaining open shooters and basket runners.
Guard Tyus Jones leads Washington in scoring with 15 points, six assists, and three steals.
Jones just had a triple-double in the Wizards’ win over the Pacers.
To maintain this lead, Washington must continue to close out shooters and prevent the Suns from getting to the free throw line.
Offensively, the Wizards must maintain their fast pace and take care of the ball.
If the game is close, Washington must make sure to finish possessions with defensive rebounds.
During crucial minutes, they are the NBA’s worst defensive rebounding club.
If the Wizards achieve these things, they will be able to leave Phoenix with their second straight victory.
