Since assuming the role of the NBA’s official uniform provider in 2017, Nike has consistently unveiled new City Edition sets each year for fans to enjoy.
During the 2023-24 season, the league introduced the City Edition uniforms for all 30 teams, with each design reflecting a specific theme relevant to the respective franchise.
The Los Angeles Lakers, renowned for their illustrious history, have drawn inspiration from this legacy for their City Edition jerseys. Each design in previous years has paid homage to a Lakers legend or referenced their 17 championships.
This season’s Lakers City Edition jersey, titled “The California Dream,” aims to portray the franchise’s evolution over the decades and its current identity. The uniform predominantly features black, symbolizing the team’s unknown identity when it first relocated to Los Angeles in the 1960s. Purple trim is present around the neck and arm sockets, cascading into black trim detail, representing the city’s sunset.
The team nаme is displayed in a triangle shape, reminiscent of their early basketball days and a symbol used during their initial years on the West Coast.
The number blocking on the uniform follows the same design used between 1999 and 2017, signifying the subsequent period of growth and change that the franchise navigated.
On the shorts, the team’s acronym “LAL” is featured on a purple buckle in gold lettering. “LAL” stands for both “Los Angeles Lakers” and “Leave A Legacy.”
The shorts panels showcase the “LA” logo with speed marks, symbolizing the franchise’s pursuit of its dreams and its inherent ability to embrace change.
The Lakers will debut “The California Dream” uniform set next Tuesday during their opening game of In-Season Tournament Group play at home against the Memphis Grizzlies. The team is scheduled to wear these uniforms on five other occasions throughout the season.
